Painting today has long since left traditional boundaries behind; it moves beyond the idea of rectangular canvases, rather breaking down the format, the materials, and the restrictions on the two-dimensional surface. Frank Stella's Shaped Canvases from the 1960s, Jackson Pollock's Drippings, and Robert Rauschenberg's Assemblages were the latest examples of a new understanding of the concept of the image and of painting. How does the youngest generation of female artists and “unidentified gender” deal with this male-dominated legacy of art history? How is the history of painting currently being rethought?
The exhibition Painting Unlimited in the newly opened rooms of K146 gallery brings together the works of three female artists and “unidentified gender” of different nationalities, all of whom are studying at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. In their works, they explore the boundaries of the image, question the possibilities of painting, and experiment with techniques and themes that are considered "feminine" in the best tradition of the underrepresented feminist pioneers of the 1960s.
Thinking outside the box is the common thread that unites the work of all four artists. The norms of artistic creation are broken down, and not only the medium but also the means are given a contemporary makeover. Elena Bulycheva washes her canvases in the washing machine, Julia Brosemann uses textile techniques, Chiausyuan Chai scrutinizes architecture for its interactions with its inhabitants, and Jigoo Hong deals with images of the body.
